What is a Methacholine Challenge Test?

The Methacholine Challenge Test (MCT) is a type of Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) used to diagnose asthma and airway hyperresponsiveness. Methacholine is a substance that, when inhaled, causes mild narrowing of the airways, mimicking the effects of an asthma attack. This test helps physicians determine how reactive your airways are and whether your symptoms may be due to asthma or another respiratory condition.

Doctors may recommend an MCT if you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, chronic cough, or other unexplained respiratory issues despite having normal results on standard lung function tests.

During the procedure, you inhale increasing concentrations of methacholine through a nebulizer. After each dose, spirometry is performed to measure lung function. A drop in lung capacity of 20% or more indicates airway hyperresponsiveness—a key indicator of asthma.

Why Choose a Methacholine Challenge Test?

Highly Sensitive for Asthma Diagnosis

Detects airway hyperreactivity even in mild or intermittent cases

Non-Invasive & Safe

Uses controlled doses of methacholine with medical supervision

Quick & Effective

The test typically lasts 20–40 minutes

Identifies Airway Sensitivity

Helps diagnose patients with normal spirometry but persistent symptoms

Guides Asthma Management

Determines if inhalers or other medications are needed

What Does a Methacholine Challenge Test Detect?

Asthma Diagnosis

Confirms if symptoms are due to asthma or another lung condition

Airway Hyperrespon siveness

Helps identify exercise-induced asthma and occupational asthma

Chronic Cough Evaluation

Determines if an unexplained persistent cough is asthma-related

Reactive Airway Diseases

Diagnoses conditions where airways overreact to triggers

Treatment Effectiveness
